SUMMER 2026: John T. Floyd Legal Fellowship

Position Overview

The John T. Floyd Legal Fellowship is a prestigious program established by the Houston chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Houston). It offers an invaluable opportunity for Law School students passionate about civil rights work. This fellowship is designed to provide law students with hands-on experience in civil rights advocacy, policy reform, and legal casework, especially within the Muslim community and other minority groups in Southeast Texas. This position is part-time and in-person at the CAIR-Houston office. Your schedule is flexible according to your class schedule (for Spring Year Fellows) and other arrangements (for Summer Fellows). No remote work is allowed for this fellowship.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with experienced civil rights attorneys to defend civil rights at the city, county, and state levels.
  • Participate in case analysis and legal intakes, providing support for clients facing discrimination and civil rights violations.
  • Assist in challenging policies that adversely affect communities of color and religious minorities.
  • Engage in legal research, advocacy, and policy reform efforts to promote justice, equality, and inclusion.
  • Contribute to building a more equitable society by addressing the legal
  • challenges marginalized communities face.
  • Gain insight into civil rights law and strategies for creating lasting change within the community.
Qualifications
  • Current law student.
  • Demonstrated interest in civil rights law and advocacy.
  • Strong research and writing skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Commitment to promoting justice, equality, and the protection of civil rights.
Compensation

Selected participants will receive a monthly stipend of $1,500 (Academic year students will receive course credit)
